Survey Aims to Improve Driver Retention
RAMP Media Group is teaming up with TRINCON Group to conduct a national online survey of drivers to help improve problem areas in the trucking industry. The survey, the first of its kind, expects to query 5,000 to 7,000 fleet owners, owner-operators and company drivers to find answers to key issues, such as why retention rates are at a record low. The survey will also create a national database that drivers and company owners can access.
“We want to dig deep into the minds of drivers so we can use the information to better the industry as a whole,” says Duff Swain, president of TRINCON, a leading national transportation industry advisory firm. “We hope to develop strategies and tactics from the results to improve retention rates and create a more positive and encouraging work environment for drivers.”
Along with job satisfaction questions, the survey asks drivers to rate other company departments such as administration and sales, and to provide feedback on improving the industry as a whole. TRINCON and RAMP Media Group created the survey using the Web-based tool, Survey Monkey.
The survey will be launched in April through publicity in RAMP’s driver recruitment magazines, Over the Road and Pro Trucker, which are distributed nationally through truck stops. Interested participants will be directed to the online questionnaire, which will go live in April. The results are expected to be published as early as June and will be used to set benchmarks for the trucking industry.
“The benchmarks will help fleet owners gauge the performance of their own organization against the rest of the industry,” says Marvin Shefsky, president of RAMP Media Group. “It will help them identify potential ‘blind spots’ in their organization that negatively impact retention rates.”
Trucking companies and fleet owners will be able to access the survey’s results through TRINCON, RAMP Media Group or www.insidetruckingonline.com.
TRINCON and RAMP will use the information to develop educational programs for fleet owners that will help them create a better work environment that encourages drivers to succeed. TRINCON will also publish the data in its soon-to-be-released employee retention manual.
