International conference focuses on driver health and wellness
The Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation, in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, recently sponsored an International Conference on Commercial Driver Health and Wellness. Held in Baltimore on Nov. 8-10, the conference served to highlight a topic of increasing importance that has been the focus of Driver HEALTH magazine and the Healthy Trucking Association of America for years.
According to event organizers, the conference had three objectives:
1. Present evidence-based benefits -- both return-on-investment and personal -- of health and wellness programs for commercial drivers and their employers, including their role in a company's human capital strategy and identifying the cost–benefits of health and wellness programs. These will include case studies and recent policy developments affecting employee health and wellbeing.
2. Highlight the latest research examining the many health issues impacting performance and safety of commercial drivers. These include obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular issues, diabetes, physical fitness, diet and nutrition, sleep disorders and more.
3. Showcase best practices and effective corporate experiences with health and wellness programs from other industries that provide solid examples for transportation companies to adopt.
A number of renowned national and international health and wellness experts, researchers, transportation company leaders, and policymakers were featured as keynote speakers and panelists.
