Quote of the Day
With all the discussion going on about the Great Recession and the Great Debate regarding the best way to stimulate the ailing economy, we thought a quote attributed to a long-deceased Irish wit and writer was appropriate:
“If all the economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion.”
-- George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week
When it comes to driver retention, oftentimes it’s the little things that count. For example, did your company join the American Trucking Associations and countless other carriers, fleets and organizations around the country to celebrate National Truck Driver Appreciation Week Nov. 1-7? The annual event honored the 3.5 million professional truck drivers who “deliver America’s freight safely and securely every day.”
“Professional truck drivers deserve recognition for safely delivering our nation’s freight,” says ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “As a result of their commitment, our nation’s highways are the safest they’ve ever been and our grocery shelves are stocked. We as a nation owe a great deal to the truck drivers out on our nation’s roads every day.”
During this National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, the ATA and its state affiliates marked the celebration by holding events across the nation. Meanwhile, the celebrations hosted by motor carriers, shippers and other trucking-related industries included million-mile and safety awards, cash bonuses or gifts, an extra paid day off, a cup of coffee or windshield cleaning at truck stops, goodie bags with fresh fruit and water, and numerous celebration meals – some lasted all week until every driver cycled through company headquarters. Office personnel at some companies were encouraged to spend a few days out on the road to see the drivers’ side of their business.
