Show Your Drivers You Care! Put a Healthy Trucking Kiosk in Your Terminal

Quote of the Day

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

– John Quincy Adams

Drivers Sound Off

The issue of drivers’ health is gaining attention from all corners of the trucking industry. The feds are taking a closer look at the issue with an eye on removing unhealthy drivers from the road. Carriers are looking at the issue with an eye on improving the health of their fleets and saving money at the same time through better retention, fewer missed sick days and lower insurance costs.
Of course, the drivers themselves are paying attention. They know the story; they’re aware that driving a truck is one of the unhealthiest professions in the country based on the large percentage of drivers who are obese, smoke, have high blood pressure or all of the above.
With that in mind, Over the Road and Pro Trucker asked a handful of drivers the following question:

How do you stay healthy on the road?

Here are some of the responses:

Ed Main, 61, Knoxville, TN
Professional driving experience: 36 years

“Stay out of the truck stops that have nothing but junk food. I prefer to go to the truck stops that have real restaurants for a healthier meal. The companies want us to be healthy, yet they’re having us going into these trucks stops where you hurry in there and get food to go and it’s just junk. I have one big meal and one small meal a day. I don’t get as much exercise as I should, but I do some walking.”

Richard Bollenbach, 52, Lake Ariel, PA
Professional driving experience: 32 years

“What I try to do is eat right. That’s the number one thing. The other thing is I walk. I figure 34 laps around my tanker truck is about a mile.”

Jim Fowler, 38, Coldwater, MI
Professional driving experience: 15 years

“I don’t. So many days I’m so exhausted I just want to go to bed so I can get up and do it again tomorrow. When I was hauling loads that required a lot of physical activity, I was doing fine. I got out of those loads about a year and about 45 pounds ago. It’s time to make a change.”

David Kilby, 54, St. Clair, MI
Professional driving experience: 2O years

“Not too long ago I stopped at a truck stop in South Dakota that had an exercise room. I think that’s a great idea. I used it. They had a sauna and an exercise room with those stationary bicycles. It was pretty neat. I wish more truck stops had them.”

Clint Schindewolf, 26, Quincy, OH
Professional driving experience: 5 years

“I try to exercise as much as I can. I run around and play with the kids when I’m home. I try to eat healthier foods when I do go into the truck stops or the fast-food restaurants. You definitely see a lot of overweight people in this industry. It’s pretty obvious they’re eating the wrong foods and not getting enough exercise.”
